It's freezing cold outside, so the snow won't be far behind. In this weather, it's important to travel safely on the road. That's why we're happy to share our tips for driving in the snow with you.

Custom speed

One of the most important tips we can give you for driving in snow is to adjust your driving speed to the conditions. Even if there's no snow, the roads can still be slick. At an adjusted speed, you can bring your car to a halt properly even in this slipperiness.

Keep your distance

Also keep more distance from the vehicle in front of you. If it were to brake suddenly, you would still be able to stop in time, even on slippery roads. This is because on slippery roads, your stopping distance is longer and you therefore need more time to bring your car to a halt. Also, pay attention when merging. Do this well in advance and not at the last moment.

Brakes on the engine

When braking in slippery conditions, it is best to downshift to a lower gear. If you have an anti-lock braking system, you do this by pressing both the brake and the clutch. You may hear strange noises or feel the brake pedal vibrate. The system ensures that your wheels can still turn and that you can steer.

Braking in corners

Braking in bends is not recommended, so avoid this as much as possible. In bends, it's best to take your foot off the accelerator until you're out of the bend. Then you can accelerate again. Also, don't pull on your steering wheel, but let the car glide smoothly over the road and steer in the right direction.

Watch out for other road users

Look carefully ahead so you can react in time to what other drivers are doing. If you are distracted in this weather and then have to react to the new traffic situation, nasty accidents can happen. Also, always look where you want to go. Even if you spin out, you must keep looking and steer in the direction you want to go.

What to do if you skid?

When the back of your car slides a bit, you can gently apply a little throttle with a front-wheel-drive car. This will straighten the car out when you have winter tyres or snow chains on your car. If you actually go into a skid, this is not advisable. Here are a few handy tips for driving in the snow during a skid:

Never brake hard

Never floor it

If your rear wheel skids, steer into it.

If your front wheel skids, steer in the direction you are skidding.

Look in the direction you want to go

Driving mode

When you are stationary and need to drive away in snow or on icy conditions, do not give too much gas and gently release the clutch. If this doesn’t work, pull away in second gear. Also, make use of existing tyre tracks. Drive in the car tracks in front of you and steer accordingly. If there are no tyre tracks visible yet, drive in fresh, loose snow. You will have more grip on the road in powdery snow than in compacted snow. Read more in this article about liability at home and abroad when driving without winter tyres..

Prepare your car for use

You can't set off immediately in winter temperatures. Always remove snow from your car's roof before you leave. At high speeds, snow can fly off your roof and pose a danger to drivers behind you. Clean your windows thoroughly so you have a clear view of the road. As a preventative measure, you can also get your car winter-ready. For example, ensure you have enough windscreen wash fluid and treat your car's rubber seals. Here you can read how to prepare your car for winter..

Winter tyres

One of the most basic tips for driving in the snow is undoubtedly winter tyres. In many places in Europe, these tyres are even mandatory. However, this is no guarantee against skidding. You must still drive carefully even with winter tyres on your car. The braking distance on snow is better with winter tyres than with summer tyres. You maintain a better grip on the road and can get moving again more easily after stopping. Read here about the further risks of driving in snow with summer tyres.

Correct tyre pressure

However, fitting winter tyres has no effect if you don't also check the tyre pressure. As the temperature drops, the tyre pressure also decreases. In short, you must adjust this pressure in winter because it is safer and thus saves fuel. If you get stuck in the snow, low tyre pressure actually helps. Read about this and more in our blog on getting your car out of the snow.

Driving an automatic

Nowadays, many people also drive automatics instead of traditional manual cars. Driving an automatic in snow is a lot harder, because you can't feel if you have grip on the road surface. Read our tips on driving an automatic in the snow in this blog..

De winter is weer in aantocht en de eerste vlokken sneeuw zijn al gevallen.
