She's the kind of daughter that says, \u2018Our family is a democracy. And I'm the queen.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

I can't remember why my daughter said this.<\/span><\/p>\n

Probably because we were having a discussion about what we would eat the next day, or where we would go on holiday in the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elly and I have seven children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your opinion as a daughter sometimes gets overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

And your opinion as a father, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Often, even.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do you have so many children?<\/b><\/p>\n

There's actually no reason for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily, they didn't all come at once.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last two came together. Then we decided that was enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

From our perspective, every child is very welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I'll never say to anyone: You should do that too, seven children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Actually, I think it's not too bad. We have a lot more cars.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that respect, seven children isn't a lot at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Children are quite expensive, aren't they?<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, that's correct.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately, we usually had enough tenants who had trouble with their own cars. They would come to us to rent a car. From the money those tenants gave us, we were able to feed our children again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you then give each child enough attention?<\/b><\/p>\n

No, of course not.<\/span><\/p>\n

But that's not necessary at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a large family, children help each other. And yes, they also get on each other's nerves. Just like in society.<\/span><\/p>\n
