You can charge your electric car at public charging stations, but you can also have a charging station installed privately or at your workplace. However, when looking at the actual cost of charging, what is the smartest option? In this blog, we will therefore answer the question: What does electric charging actually cost? We will also immediately consider the different charging options and which of these is the most economical.

The average cost of charging an electric car at a charging station.

What is the average cost of charging an electric car now? This depends partly on whether you charge your car at a normal public charging station or at a special rapid charging station. Furthermore, the capacity of your battery naturally determines how much money you will spend on a charging session. At a normal public charging station, you pay for installation, maintenance, and the like, among other things. The rates for a charging station therefore vary considerably and depend on the provider and the location. On average, the rate in 2024 is between €0.25 and €0.55 per kWh. For an electric car with a 60 kWh battery, you therefore pay around €24 for a full battery. With a average range You then drive approximately 300 kilometres with it, costing you around €0.08 per kilometre.

Cost of electric charging at a rapid charging station

A rapid charger is a bit more expensive, as it's also the quickest way to get your car charged up again. However, you can often take out a subscription for this, meaning you pay relatively less per kWh you use. With a rapid charger, you should expect a charging rate between €0.50 and €0.70. In the example above of an electric car with a battery capacity of 60 kWh, rapid charging would cost you €36 for a full charge, which is approximately €0.12 per kilometre.

Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a charging station?

At a charging station, you pay an average of €0.40. Charging at home with your own charging station is generally cheaper than at a public charging station. This is because you pay the kilowatt-hour price directly to your own energy supplier. Especially if you also have solar panels on your roof, you can provide your own necessário power. However, how much does it cost to charge an electric car at home? This is somewhat dependent on what your energy supplier charges. On average, home charging rates are €0.32. In the previously used example, this means you pay €19 for a full battery when charging at home. This works out at approximately €0.06 per kilometre.

Pricing on work load

For now, the cheapest option remains to charge your electric car at work. This is because a business electricity rate is charged at work, making you cheaper per kWh. At the average employer, you can already charge for €0.11 per kilowatt-hour, meaning you only pay €6.60 for a full battery. Per kilometre, this is an amount of €0.02.

Is electric charging cheaper than refuelling?

A electric or hybrid car may be more expensive to purchase, but is cheaper to run. Not only does an electric car have fewer moving parts, but it also drives more efficiently. The costs of both maintenance and electricity are therefore lower than with a car that runs on diesel or petrol. If you drive an electric car 15,000 kilometres annually, you will pay approximately €1200-€1800 per year for electricity. If you use a car that runs on fuel for the same number of kilometres per year, you will spend an average of €2100.

Er worden steeds meer elektrische en hybride auto’s gereden, waardoor er steeds meer behoefte is aan oplaadmogelijkheden.
