Rental car stolen: what now?

If your rental car is stolen, follow these steps.

1. Report the theft to the local police and also report personal belongings. Mention that it was a rental car and note the file number.
2. Inform the car rental company and state the file number. They may contact the police.
3. Check the insurance terms of your rental contract and see if you might be liable.
4. Arrange alternative transportation.
5. If any personal belongings have been stolen, please contact your travel insurer.

Rental conditions

The rental agreement also includes the insurance conditions, including the conditions in the event of theft. There may be a deductible. You may even be fully liable for the damage due to carelessness or negligence – for example, if you leave the keys in your car. Often, the insurance does not cover theft of personal items that were in your car. You will have to claim this damage from your travel insurer.
