Rental car stolen: what now?
You don't want to think about it of course, but just like your own car, your rental car can also be stolen. And then it is good to know what your responsibilities and liability are.
It doesn't happen often: theft of a rental car. A few tips to reduce the chance of theft.
- Never leave a car unattended with the keys in the ignition.
- Always lock your car. Even if you are only away for a short while.
- Preferably park in managed, well-lit parking lots.
- Preferably park in busy places.
- Don't leave your car keys lying around.
- Do not leave valuables (visible) in your car.
If your rental car is stolen, follow these steps.
- Report the theft to the local police and also report personal belongings. Mention that it was a rental car and note the file number.
- Inform the car rental company and state the file number. They may contact the police.
- Check the insurance terms of your rental contract and see if you might be liable.
- Arrange alternative transportation.
- If any personal belongings have been stolen, please contact your travel insurer.
Rental conditions
The rental agreement also includes the insurance conditions, including the conditions in the event of theft. There may be a deductible. You may even be fully liable for the damage due to carelessness or negligence – for example, if you leave the keys in your car. Often, the insurance does not cover theft of personal items that were in your car. You will have to claim this damage from your travel insurer.
