10 Tips for Visiting Maastricht

The capital of Limburg is also the most beautiful city in the province, although we may be a little biased. Here are 10 tips for visiting Maastricht.

1. ENCI quarry

The ENCI quarry, created by years of marl extraction, is now a nature reserve where you can walk and enjoy nature. Via a staircase of 215 steps, you can descend into the quarry, but first, of course, you will enjoy the magnificent view.

2. Saturday flea market

Every Saturday and bargain Sunday, the Boschstraat is the scene of a Flea market and antique fair. Browse through the items on offer and you might soon be appearing on the TV programme Tussen Kunst & Kitsch.

3. Vrijthof

Perhaps the most beautiful square in the Netherlands: the Vrijthof, with its twin churches and cosy cafés. The terraces are a mix of locals and tourists, enjoying food and drink.

4. In the Old Ostrich

Café In den Ouden Vogelstruys, On the corner of Vrijthof and Platielstraat, is one of Maastricht's oldest pubs. When the pub previously changed owners, the name changed from Struysvogel to Vogelstruys or vice versa. But that tradition was broken a long time ago.

5. The Jekerkwartier

The Jekerkwartier, with its medieval relics, is Maastricht's Latin Quarter. You can enjoy exclusive shopping, art, and delicious food and drink. Experience the ‘real’ Maastricht in this authentic part of the city.

6. Maastricht Natural History Museum

Maastricht is rich in diverse museums. We still find the most enjoyable to be the Natural History Museum, ..., in the Jekerkwartier mentioned above. The museum has a rich collection and regularly holds temporary exhibitions. The main attraction is Bèr, the fossil of a mosasaurus.

Wyck

Maastricht is more than just the historic city centre on the left bank. On the ‘other’ side of the Sint-Servaasbrug lies the characteristic district of Wyck. Here you will find a surprising range of small businesses and cosy cafés. Don't forget to also visit the architectural gem Céramique.

8. Knees in the sour

Knees in sour, or rabbit in sour, is a typical Limburg dish from Maastricht. For the best version of this dish, in our opinion, you can go to Café Sjiek or bar-bistro Pieke Potloed.

9. Mabi City Centre Hotel

You can spend the night in various hotels in Maastricht, but for a truly special experience you must go to the Mabi City Centre Hotel located just a stone's throw from the market square. Previously, a cinema was housed here, which has been translated into the hotel's theme. Enjoy your stay!

10. The Fire Station Canteen

Of Fire station canteen, in the former Maastricht fire station, is a special place for a good breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can go to the bar for a drink. Need to work or study? Feel free to plug in your laptop!
