There are many reasons to rent a car. Some you can think of yourself. Others are less obvious. Here are seven.
1. You don't have your own car
Many people travel almost exclusively by public transport and do not own a car. If you only need a car occasionally and do not drive much, it is soon more economical to rent a car than to own one.
2. You are going on holiday
For many people, a small or compact car is sufficient... Until they go on holiday. Because then, suddenly, the whole family plus luggage has to fit inside. Many people hire a (larger) car for the holiday period. That is cheaper than buying one if you only need it for two weeks a year.
3. You're getting married
You'll have a bridal car, let's assume, but you'll only need one for a day in your life. It makes sense to hire one rather than buy one. Most people choose a sporty or classic bridal car.
You can drive all of Adrem's classic cars yourself! Or you can be driven by someone who really enjoys it.
4. You are moving house
When your son or daughter moves out, you'll soon need a small van. If the whole family is moving house, it's best to hire a large van with a tail lift. You can legally drive these with a standard car driving licence (B).
5. Your own car is in the garage
If your own car is in the garage for maintenance or repair, you sometimes get a loaner car. If that's not the case, you can always hire one for the period you're without your own.
6. Undercapacity
The business tenant may sometimes experience peak demand, making their own fleet insufficient. Renting can then offer a solution. Many companies also choose to lease their entire fleet anyway.
7. Family outing / Children's party
You're going out with the kids and some friends are coming along, perhaps for a birthday party. The group usually won't fit in the family car. It's often more economical to rent a people carrier instead of taking two cars. Just think of the savings on fuel alone.

Unfortunately, I fall into the first category: I haven't had a car for years, and although it saves a lot on costs and I also find it a good choice for the environment, it is sometimes difficult. I'm moving out of Amsterdam soon, renting a moving van seems like a good idea, but honestly, I'm just afraid it won't go as smoothly as before and I'll get myself into trouble. What do you think, is it a bad idea to also drive a (heavy) van right away?
Best regards,
Roy
Dear Roy,
If you live in Amsterdam, I can well imagine that you can manage perfectly well without a car. When moving, you can indeed easily hire a van. Up to a medium size, these vans are perfectly fine to drive without experience. You should especially pay attention to taking corners more widely than you are normally used to.
Good luck with your move!
