Are you going to Germany? In a growing number of cities and regions, you'll need an environmental sticker. This also applies to Aachen, just across the Limburg border. But what about when you rent a car?
To improve air quality, so-called environmental zones (Umweltzonen) have been introduced in parts of Germany. You may only enter these zones if your vehicle has a valid environmental sticker. Environmental zones are mainly found in German city centres. With the sticker, the German government aims to combat air pollution and encourage the use of public transport. The sticker, or Umweltplakette, also applies to cars with foreign number plates.
Red, yellow, and green
Depending on your vehicle's emissions, you will receive a green, yellow, or red sticker. Allocation is based on your vehicle registration number. Vehicles with a red sticker are not permitted in environmental zones. With a yellow sticker, you will only have access to the city of Neu-Ulm. A blue sticker for electric vehicles is also in the pipeline.
Order environmental sticker
You can order the environmental sticker online via TÜV Netherlands. The cost for this is €16.95. ANWB members pay €13.95. You can also order the sticker at the ANWB shop (e.g. in Heerlen and Maastricht) and at most Dutch GWK offices. Don't forget to have your vehicle registration document to hand.
You stick the sticker on the bottom right of the inside of the windscreen. As seen from the outside, the sticker is therefore on the bottom left. If you do not have a (properly affixed) sticker, you could face a fine of Eighty Euros (€80) – many times the purchase price of the sticker. So, do not take unnecessary risks and purchase the environmental sticker.
Rental car and environmental sticker
And what about driving into an environmental zone with your (Dutch) rental car? Feel free to book a car or van. Approximately one week in advance, we can tell you which registration number you will receive, and you can then book based on the registration number. Usually, you do not need the vehicle registration document to apply for an environmental sticker for a rental car. If that is the case, you can borrow the vehicle registration document for the car in question from us. With the borrowed vehicle registration document, you can then apply for your environmental sticker well in advance. For more information, you can always contact us, of course!
