Can you drive a rental car through toll roads? And how do you pay for them?

Can you drive a rental car through toll roads? And how do you pay for them?

Are you travelling by rental car in the UK or abroad? Then there's a good chance you'll encounter toll roads along the way. But are you actually allowed to use them with a rental car? And what about paying tolls? In this article, we'll explain what you need to know before you drive onto a toll road.

Can you drive over toll roads with a rental car?

Yes, you are permitted to use toll roads, toll bridges, and toll tunnels with a hire car. There are no restrictions from Adrem or other rental companies. You will, however, need to pay the tolls yourself, just as you would with your own car.

Toll roads are mainly found in countries like France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Austria. But you will also encounter them in the Netherlands, for example at the Westerscheldetunnel or the Kiltunnel.

How do you pay tolls with a rental car?

There are various ways to pay tolls, depending on the country you're driving in:

  1. Cash or card

At traditional toll booths, you usually pay directly. You take a ticket upon entry and pay when you leave the toll section.

  1. Automatic toll collection (vignette or box)

Some countries use a vignette (like Switzerland or Austria) or an electronic toll device (like in Portugal or Italy). These are not standard in all hire cars. Therefore, find out in advance what you need and if you need to arrange anything extra for your destination.

Heads up at border crossings

Not every rental company allows you to simply cross the border. Do you want to drive your rental car abroad? Always inform us in advance when booking. Adrem can then inform you about the rules and any additional requirements, such as toll stickers or environmental stickers.

What happens if you don't pay a toll?

If you drive on a toll road without paying or do not have a vignette in a compulsory area, you can receive a fine. In some countries, that fine is automatically sent to the vehicle's registered keeper. The rental company can then charge you these costs, possibly with administrative fees.

So make sure you prepare well. Tax evasion is often more expensive than paying properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is the toll price included in the rent?

No, toll roads are not included in the rental price. You pay these costs yourself during the journey.

Should I pay the toll afterwards or immediately?

That depends on the country. You usually pay immediately, but in some countries you receive the bill later, for example via an online system or camera recognition.

Can I get help with questions about toll roads?

Certainly. Feel free to ask when you collect your rental car, or contact us in advance. We're happy to help.
