What does the car battery actually do?

Normally, a car battery recharges itself while driving. This is done by the car's alternator. When you start the engine, the charging process actually begins immediately. A battery can suddenly go flat for several reasons. For instance, leaving your lights on or making many short trips. Cold weather in winter can also quickly drain a battery. Large temperature differences can also cause moisture to build up in the headlight. Read more about it here. Also check the oil in your engine more often. You can read how to do this here.

If in doubt, it's better to call in a specialist. A flat battery is one of the most common ways of Autopouch, but it can also happen that your car will no longer change gear. There can also be quite a few problems with the timing belt. Read here how to recognise problems with this..

Charging a car battery with a special charger

If you break down with a flat battery, you can try to recharge it using a special battery charger. However, this is only an option if you are somewhere for an extended period, as this charging takes time and requires some preparation. For example, you need to have the same charger as your battery type. In some cases, you may even have to remove the battery from the car to charge it. Before using the charger, also read the manual to prevent dangerous situations.

Jump-starting a car battery

Naturally, you don't typically keep a battery charger in the boot of your car, so it's usually better to try and charge your battery with jump leads if you break down. However, this is only a temporary solution. The jump leads only give your battery an energy boost, enabling it to start the car. This can cause a voltage spike, so be careful when starting your car this way.

How to charge a car battery with jump leads

To jump-start a car, you need two cars. Position both cars close to each other. Then, first connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the working car's battery. The red cable also goes to the positive terminal of the car with the flat battery. Next, take the black cable and connect it to the negative terminal of the battery in the car providing assistance. On the car with the flat battery, the black cable is connected to the car's chassis (earthing point). The working car should now run for about five minutes at an increased RPM. Now start the car with the flat battery as well, and then let it run for five minutes too. After this, turn on both the rear window heater and the blower. Finally, disconnect the jump leads in the reverse order of connection.

Charging a car battery: how long?

After starting, it is important to let the car idle. After this, it is also important to drive the car around, as this will get the alternator working again. Be sure to drive around for about half an hour. In total, with jumper cables and all, you will need approximately 45 minutes to an hour. With a battery charger, charging takes longer. To get your battery fully charged, you will need at least nine to twelve hours.
