Car chip shortage

Chip shortage in automotive industry also affects car rental companies

We are living in a time of acute shortages across all sorts of industries. The housing market is under strain because there is simply a shortage of homes, but various other industries are also struggling with significant deficits. For instance, we are currently experiencing a chip shortage in the automotive industry. In this blog, we will discuss the chip shortage in the automotive industry, the developments in 2022, and its consequences for car rental.

How did the chip shortage come about?

The corona crisis affected a lot of industries, including the auto industry. There was sharply lower demand for cars and, as a result, orders for cars fell. So the crisis forced car manufacturers to cut production considerably. This, of course, was a major blow to the industry. What did increase demand was computers and mobile phones. Working from home became the new normal during the corona pandemic and therefore demand for these devices rose. But the demand for game consoles also continued to grow; people obviously wanted something to do during the lockdown. This caused car companies to fall behind. Computers, phones and game consoles took precedence over the microchips being produced. Eventually, the pandemic weakened and the demand for cars increased again, so more cars were produced. But because of the increase in production, there was a chip shortage in the auto industry during 2022. This was because the chips had been used in large numbers for other devices.

The chip shortage in the automotive industry and car rental

Has the chip shortage in the automotive industry really had such a significant impact on car hire? In principle, this isn't too bad. What *has* had a major impact was the coronavirus crisis. Due to the lockdowns, nobody was going out, and there was little to no demand for hire cars. The pandemic therefore had a big influence on our car hire business, but luckily we're steadily recovering and seeing demand rise again.

Positive reporting

For approximately a year and a half, the automotive world has been grappling with severe chip shortages for cars. However, according to the latest reports, the future is looking brighter again. Where the chip shortage made it difficult to build enough cars, car manufacturers now have more breathing room in this area. More microchips are available, and the automotive industry is benefiting from this. The chip shortage for cars appears to be a thing of the past. But we're not out of the woods yet, and shortages in other industries are also not over. One thing is certain: the aftermath of corona is not over yet.
