The world around us is getting smarter and smarter – and so are our cars. Connected cars collect data about your speed, driving style, and braking behaviour, among other things. This data is also shared over the Internet of Things (IoT). This raises questions about data protection and your privacy.
The ANWB is now advocating for specific legislation and regulations regarding the use of car data. The association gauged the opinion of 10,500 motorists. 84 percent of respondents are in favour of legislation that protects the data cars collect.
Whose are the collected data?
A modern car continuously gathers information. On one hand, to warn or inform the driver. For example, when an appointment needs to be made for a new service. Or when tyre pressure is too low. But also where you are driving, how fast you are driving and how hard you are braking.
Who can view all this data? The car manufacturer? The importer? Your garage? The owner, which is often the leasing company? Or the driver? Or others? Not everything has been legally settled regarding this yet.
Prefer to share data with car garage
The majority of panellists are not necessarily unwilling to share vehicle data. However, a majority of them indicate that they want to retain control over who the data is shared with. For example, 81% have no objection to the data being shared with their own car garage. 72% are willing to share the data with the ANWB itself, which could be useful in cases of breakdown, for instance. However, we are hesitant to share the data with third-party apps. Only 16% of respondents have no objection to this.
Benefits of connected cars often still unknown
The ANWB surveyed another 1,000 motorists. More than three-quarters of them had no idea what they actually gain from a connected car – or what its disadvantages are. Almost nine out of ten respondents said they were concerned about the commercial use of the data collected. Almost as many motorists are afraid of being hacked. The vast majority of participants in the survey are in favour of legislation in this area.
