Buying out excess insurance on a hire car: worth it or a waste of money?

Anyone who rents a car will almost always encounter an excess. This is the amount you have to pay yourself if damage occurs to the rental car. Many people are unsure whether to waive the excess. In this article, we explain exactly what the excess entails, when waiving it is sensible, and when it might not be necessary.

What is the excess on a rental car?

The excess is the portion of the damage that you pay yourself if something happens to the rental car. This can be damage from an accident, parking damage, or windscreen damage. An excess may apply even if you are not the one responsible.

At Adrem, the standard excess depends on the type of vehicle. For passenger cars, it is €1,000, and for vans, it is €1,250. These amounts are known in advance and are clearly stated during the booking process.

It means to prepay your excess.

Buying out means you pay extra to reduce the excess. You are essentially buying out a portion of your financial liability.

At Adrem, there are two options:

  • You retain the full excess (standard)
  • You lower the excess for a daily surcharge of up to €250 (private car) or €350 (van).

Please note: fully waiving the excess is with Adrem not possible.

Is it wise to buy out your excess?

That depends on your situation. Here are some considerations:

Early repayment can be smart if:

  • If you're driving a new or expensive vehicle
  • Travelling long distances or for multiple days
  • You are driving in an unfamiliar environment or heavy traffic
  • You want certainty and to avoid unexpected costs

Buying off is less necessary when:

  • You're making a short trip and driving carefully
  • You are already insured via a credit card or travel insurance
  • You are prepared to take the risk of extra costs

Please note: External insurance often reimburses afterwards and not always all costs.

What is the cost of buying off the excess?

At Adrem, you pay a daily supplement to reduce your excess. The exact price depends on the vehicle and will be shown when you make your reservation. On average, the supplement is between €12.50 and €17.50 per day.

The waiver of deductible doesn't cover:

Even if you lower your own risk, some damages are excluded. Think, for example, of:

  • Damage due to reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence
  • Damage to tyres or interior (unless otherwise agreed)

Always read the terms of your rental agreement carefully.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to buy off the excess with Adrem?

No, it is not obligatory. You choose for yourself whether you want to buy it out or not.

Am I fully covered if I pay it off?

No, a full buyout is not possible with Adrem. You reduce the risk to a lower amount, but certain damage claims remain excluded.

Your choice, your certainty

Waiving your excess is a personal choice. It offers more certainty, but also comes with additional costs. At Adrem, we explain everything clearly so you can choose what suits you.
