Refuelling rental car

Fuel policies explained for car hire: full-full, full-empty & more

Are you going to hire a car? Then you'll encounter a fuel policy. This might sound like a minor detail, but it can actually make a difference in cost and convenience. In this article, we'll explain the different fuel policies available when hiring a car and what you should look out for.

What is a fuel control unit?

A fuel policy dictates the state in which you must take and return the rental car regarding the fuel tank. Various arrangements are possible, depending on the rental company and the type of vehicle. At Adrem, we like to keep it clear and fair for you.

What fuel arrangements are there?

  1. Variable regulation

This is the most transparent and customer-friendly option:

  • You collect the car with a full tank of petrol.
  • You'll return it with a full tank.

If you do not refuel the car completely before returning it, you may be charged extra for refuelling.

Advantage: you only pay for what you consume
Note: don't forget to fill up just before handing in

  1. Empty the battery system

With this arrangement:

  • You collect the car with a full tank of petrol.
  • You hand it in without refuelling.

The rental company refuels the vehicle itself, but often charges a surcharge for it. This means you pay more than the normal fuel price.

Advantage: quick and easy return
Disadvantage: you may pay for fuel you haven't used

  1. Empty-empty arrangement

You receive the car with an empty tank and must return it empty as well. This is difficult to estimate and is therefore almost never used anymore.

Risk: difficult to empty completely, you'll soon pay too much

What is the fuel policy at Adrem?

Here at Adrem, we typically operate on a full-to-full policy. You'll receive the car with a full tank of fuel and are expected to return it with a full tank. This way, you know exactly where you stand and never overpay.

Tip: Always refuel your car with a receipt from a nearby petrol station. This way, you can be sure everything is in order.

What happens if I don't return the refuelling?

If the tank is not full upon return, we will refill it for you. We will charge the current price per litre, plus a small fee for refuelling. The costs will be settled afterwards via your deposit or credit card.
