Great yellow wagtail gets paternity leave

While I'm sitting in the garden writing, a strange bird keeps flying around me. And I mean a real bird.

I don't know anything about birds at all.

I'd much rather follow my grandad's lead. He used to tell me that there are really only 2 types of birds: sijsjes (which fly through the air) and drijfsijsjes (which swim in the water). Easy, right?

The bird flying around me is yellow on the underside and has a long tail. The little creature cannot keep still at all. It constantly bobs its tail and rear end. Nervous wreck.

Curiously, I'm searching to see what kind of bird this might be. I know canaries can be yellow, but the top of this bird is dark and its tail is much longer.

After seeing a few pictures, I'm sure of it: the bird flying around me is a large yellow wagtail. Strange, because I find it a small bird. How small is the little yellow wagtail then?

And he is building a nest. In our gutter. Because there is still a strange yellow bird flying around: the partner.

I'm reading on the RSPB website that the young are looked after by the male after they've fledged. So he gets paternity leave to look after his chicks.

The little female is already starting to build a new nest for the second clutch.

Phew, what busy little things!

Are you also such a busybody when building or renovating your house? To the DIY store, flooring specialist, curtain shop, lighting store or IKEA?

You can fly back and forth with your car each time.

If the items become too big for your car, I'd be happy to help you with a van. Feel free to rent one!
