Are you going on holiday to France this year? Or are you travelling through the country on your way to your holiday destination? Then it's good to know that the speed limit on some French roads will be lowered from 90 km/h to 80 km/h from July 1st.
The French government announced earlier this year that from 1 July this year, the speed limit on some roads outside built-up areas will be reduced from 90 km/h to 80 km/h. This applies to roads with a single lane in each direction without a central reservation.
The speed limit on dual carriageways with a central reservation remains 110 km/h. On motorways, you can drive at a maximum of 130 km/h. Within built-up areas, the maximum speed is 50 km/h. Nothing changes in this regard.
Reducing road deaths
The French government decided on this measure because the number of fatal accidents on French roads was increasing. More than half of these accidents occurred on so-called ‘secondary roads’, where the maximum speed limit is 90 km/h until 1 July.
Speeding fine
What happens if you drive too fast on such a road? On roads with a maximum speed above 50 km/h, the fine for exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 km/h is at least 68 euros. However, if you pay within 46 days, you pay less: 45 euros.
If you drive 20-50 km/h too fast, the fines start at 135 euros. In addition, you can receive a driving ban for up to three years. If you drive 50 km/h or more too fast? Then you have to pay at least 1500 euros. You can also receive a driving ban for up to three years.
Are you driving to France this summer, or do you plan to hire a car there? Please observe the traffic laws, drive safely, and have a wonderful holiday!
