You'll never believe what people leave behind in hire cars
Okay, we've found some strange items in our hire cars before, but you'll never believe what customers have left behind in the cars of fellow companies.
Prosthetic leg
In Liverpool (UK), our Europcar colleagues found an artificial leg. Whether a man was subsequently seen hopping on one leg in Liverpool, or whether the renter had just bought the prosthesis as a curiosity, we don't know.
Harness
Where and when, we don't know exactly, but reportedly, someone once left a complete medieval suit of armour in a rental car. How you could forget something like that is beyond our comprehension.
Hand grenade
South Africa is not the safest country in the world. A car rental company once found a stray hand grenade in a returned car. The renter was a private security company.
Human skeleton
In Seattle in the United States, a car rental company made a rather gruesome discovery. A complete human skeleton was found on the back seat! It turned out to be used in biology lessons.
Glass eye
In England, someone apparently wanted to keep an eye on things, as a glass eye was found in a returned hire car. The owner never came forward.
Stretcher
Whether anyone actually sick or injured was transported, we don't know. But a stretcher was once reportedly found in a returned hire bus. Perhaps the van served as an improvised ambulance for some underworld figures?
Electric hedge trimmer
Okay, among the other items, an electric hedge trimmer might not seem that strange. But you're less likely to leave a hedge trimmer in a hire car than, say, your wallet or phone, we thought.
Stuffed deer head
On the way back from the flea market or taxidermist, you decide to return your rental car or van, only to forget your newly acquired deer head. Unlikely? Yes. But apparently not impossible.
Underwear
Perhaps not surprisingly, worn underwear is also sometimes found in returned rental cars and vans. Probably not because someone forgot it while changing clothes.
Engagement ring
Accounts differ regarding the found diamond engagement ring. According to one account, the ring was found in a box of chocolates. Another story suggests the ring was in a sock. Or, of course, they could be two separate stories. We do not know if the ring was ever claimed.
