During a moving A lot will be coming your way. These are busy times when a lot needs to be arranged to ensure the move to your new home goes smoothly. To prevent stress and be sure you don't overlook important things, it can help to create a checklist beforehand with the main points of attention.
Finalise preparatory phase
After the preparatory phase has covered the main administrative and practical matters, such as informing important parties, making arrangements with the new residents of your old house, and arranging a van and/or removal company, moving day will be closer than you might initially think. However, there are still a few preparatory actions that need to be completed just before the actual moving day. Take a look at this short checklist or our Comprehensive checklist. A checklist:
- Defrosting and cleaning the fridge.
- Set the full freezer to the coldest setting.
- Dismantle and prepare the furniture for moving.
- A (parking) space for the Removal van to book.
- The very last things to pack.
- Securing/protecting the computer's hard drive.
- Labelling the moving boxes so that you can easily find everything again without any hassle once you arrive at your new home.
Moving boxes
Although the number you need depends on the size of your possessions, an average family of four will soon need thirty to forty Moving boxes You'll need to be able to transport all your belongings. Moving boxes with a high load-bearing capacity are the best and safest option. Depending on the size, a moving box costs one to two euros. In addition to the moving boxes, you will most likely also need packing paper and foam or bubble wrap to provide extra protection for the items being transported. Special storage and moving blankets can be useful for protecting furniture. Certainly for a large move, you'll soon need fifteen to twenty moving blankets.
The actual move
After all the preparatory work, it's time for the grand finale: the day everything needs to be moved to the new house. Getting up in good time will help prevent stress and ensure you begin the task in a relaxed manner. Although most of your belongings will likely have been packed by now, it's important to first fill the last few boxes and check all the rooms once more for any overlooked items. This way, you can be sure that nothing important is left behind.
Moving Out Checklist
Om onaangename verrassingen te voorkomen, is het handig om een Checklist to create on which you note the main points of attention for moving day itself.
- Try to bundle keys, important documents, cards and money together as much as possible. Tie the bundle together with a thread and preferably store it safely in your hand luggage.
- Take the curtains down in the bedroom(s).
- Take spare fuses for electrical appliances in your hand luggage.
- Turn off the gas and water supply.
- Take meter readings to ensure you don't overpay or underpay on your final bill.
- Make sure all the windows and doors of the old house are shut tight when you leave.
- Cover your furniture with removal blankets to protect it during transport.
- Use a dolly and/or furniture sliders to move heavy items such as the fridge, washing machine, or chests of drawers.
- Secure your belongings in the van with ratchet straps to prevent them from shifting while driving.
- Don't forget to also take a toolbox for, among other things, dismantling and assembling furniture.
- Drain the water supply if the move takes place in the winter months.
