Moving house – what transport options do I have?

When you move house, you will of course need transport to get your belongings from your old home to your new one. What options do you have? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of all these transport options?

Estate car

For transporting a washing machine or a limited number of boxes, a removal trailer might be spacious enough. A removal trailer is simply a covered trailer. Just be mindful of which driving licence you need: B, BE, or BE+. This depends on the weight of the trailer.

The disadvantage of a box trailer is – apart from the fact that many people don't like driving a car with a trailer – the price. A box trailer costs an average of 50 euros per day. For roughly the same amount, you can also rent a van, including fuel.

Van

A van offers the same comfort as a car and is just as easy to drive. Ideal for anyone who prefers not to drive with a trailer. With a generous 3 m³ of load space, a van offers surprisingly much room.

Van

Vans come in many shapes and sizes. A van suitable for small to large removals over short to medium distances. You can still drive even the largest vans (with a tail lift) with your ‘normal’ (car) driving licence B.

Don't all your belongings fit in the van? Remember that in most cases, it's more cost-effective to make a few trips back and forth than to hire a lorry and move your things all at once.

Lorry

A lorry is suitable for large moves over a few hundred kilometres. For shorter distances, it is often cheaper to hire a van and make a few return trips.

To drive a lorry, you naturally need a lorry driving licence (licence C), also known as a ‘large driving licence’. For some lorries, you also need a driver's qualification card or a driver's pass.

  1. Hello. I may need a van soon to transport some items from London to here. (2 TVs, CDs, clothing, etc.) Basically, small household items. No furniture. What do you recommend? What kind of rental contract?
