You're moving house and are faced with a choice: move yourself or hire a professional removal company, who will do all the heavy lifting for you. But how much does it actually cost to hire a removal company?
Call-out fee
It's important to choose a removal company that's located near you. A removal company will charge a call-out fee from a certain distance, based on the number of kilometres to your front door. These call-out fees vary greatly between removal companies and can be as much as one euro per kilometre. So make sure you get all the information you need beforehand!
Manual
You can have a removal company dismantle all your furniture and pack your belongings. You can also do this yourself, leaving only the heavy lifting and loading and unloading of the removal van to the movers.
A moving team usually consists of two to three people. This means the driver plus one or two extra movers, who cost an average of 30 euros per hour. More movers therefore cost more money, but a move often proceeds faster and more efficiently as a result, making it cheaper in the end.
Transport
Finally, you will of course also pay for the removal transport itself. A small removal van already costs €60 per hour, including the driver. This also applies to loading and unloading.
Additional costs
Many removal companies charge extra for weekend moves. Moving at the weekend is quickly one and a half times more expensive than moving during the week, so it's best not to move on a Saturday or Sunday if you want to save money.
Prefer to move yourself?
It's difficult to say exactly how much a removal company costs. After all, every move is different. The amount of belongings to be moved plays a role, the accessibility of your home, the distance between your current and new residence, and so on. Keep in mind that a move by a removal company can quickly cost 1000 euros.
The fact is that moving yourself is almost always cheaper than hiring a professional removal company. With a bit of help from friends and family, your costs will often be limited to hiring a van, which will serve as a removal lorry.
