Moving house yourself: what does that actually cost?

One of the things you can easily save money on when moving is the cost of a professional removal company. After all, you can quite easily move yourself, possibly with some help from family and friends. But what do you need? And how much does that actually cost?

Moving materials

First, you'll need various moving materials, such as moving boxes, moving blankets, a hand truck, and so on. Professional moving boxes cost around two euros each and are a lot sturdier than old banana boxes from the supermarket. Expect a two-person household to need around 40 moving boxes!

Items such as sack trucks, platform trolleys, etc., can be hired from as little as three to four euros per day. You can also hire moving blankets and packing crates for around one euro per item per day.

Expect to spend a total of approximately 150 to 200 euros on buying and/or hiring moving materials. This excludes large equipment, such as a stairlift. You can hire these from around fifty euros per day.

Transport and travel

Secondly, you naturally need transport to move all your furniture and belongings from A to B. You have different forms of removal transport. You can hire a trailer or a moving van, or opt for a transit van or lorry.

We've listed the pros and cons of the different transport methods for you.

A standard, open trailer isn't really suitable for moving house, as your belongings are exposed to the elements. A box trailer – a covered trailer – is a better alternative, but like a regular trailer, it offers little space. Furthermore, you need a BE driving licence for the heavier variants.

You can, of course, hire a lorry, but you'll need a lorry driver's licence (‘large licence’) for that. Delivery van or removal van In contrast, you can drive with your ‘ordinary’ driving licence.

A large removal van offers about half the loading space of a small lorry, meaning you can typically move your belongings in two trips. For an average move, this is considerably cheaper than one trip with a lorry.

Adrem car and van hire Limburg has a wide selection of vans and removal vans – from a Small van with 3 m³ cargo space until large van with tail lift and preferably 20 m³ load space. For hire from one hour to one or more days, potentially including fuel, this is the most flexible transport solution for your move.
