Wrong fuel – what now?

Putting the wrong fuel in your car can have serious consequences. You're unlikely to put the wrong fuel in your own car. However, it's much more likely when you borrow or rent a car. And as we know from experience, it can happen to anyone.

Filling your diesel car with petrol

If you put petrol in a diesel engine and then drive it, you will cause damage to the fuel system. This is because petrol does not have the lubricating function that diesel does. If you realise in time that you have refuelled incorrectly, i.e. before you have driven off, it is best to call breakdown assistance. They will then come with a special installation to drain the fuel.

Putting diesel in your petrol car

Filling a petrol car with diesel is much less common. Even if you've already driven away, the damage is often still manageable. You'll soon notice the engine running more poorly and the oil level rising. It's then important to pull over as quickly as possible and call breakdown assistance. Also, be aware of further repair costs.

Other fuels

In our neighbouring countries Belgium and Germany, you will encounter the fuel E10. This is essentially petrol diluted with (10 percent) bioethanol. For your diesel car, this fuel is practically as harmful as regular petrol. With a petrol engine, you can usually just fill up with this alternative fuel. Read more about this in this blog post.

To be honest, have you ever put the wrong fuel in your car? It apparently happens to the average person once in their lifetime. So don't be embarrassed.
