Nearly 60 percent of the provincial roads in Limburg are unsafely
designed. At least according to a study by VIA, conducted on behalf of
the ANWB. Only 40 percent of N-roads have a
safe road design.
Provincial roads relatively dangerous
Provincial roads are responsible for one in five traffic fatalities and are therefore relatively more dangerous than national and municipal roads, as those form a much larger part of the road network.
Safe road design and accident rate
An unsafe road design does not automatically mean a higher chance of accidents. Conversely, a safe road design does not guarantee a low accident rate. In other words, there are unsafely designed roads where relatively few accidents occur, and safely designed roads with relatively many accidents. This is partly due to traffic density.
Looking at the number of accidents, we can classify 32 percent of Limburg's provincial roads as 'high-risk'. Two out of three of these 'accident roads' — or 22.55 percent of all provincial roads — are also unsafely designed. The accident rate on these roads can therefore be reduced by implementing safer road designs. The ANWB urges the province to take measures on these roads to improve road safety.
