Speeding fines to become slightly more expensive in 2018

Pressing the accelerator too hard in 2018 may result in a slightly higher fine than in the past year. Driving too fast will become more expensive, especially outside built-up areas. Minor speeding offences will not become more expensive.

If you drive 20 kilometres per hour over the speed limit outside built-up areas, you will pay a €180 fine next year, whereas last year you paid €178. The administrative costs remain the same this year, after rising from €7 to €9 last year.

Other traffic offences

The height of the fines for other traffic violations isn't changing much. Tailgating (up to 80 km/h) will still cost you €280, just like last year, and driving unnecessarily in the left-hand lane will cost you €140. Overtaking on the right will still result in a fine of €230, as will holding a mobile phone while driving. If you ‘forget’ to signal, it will now cost you €95: €5 more than last year.

What do we think?

As a car rental company, we naturally consider road safety important. However, fines should also be proportionate to the seriousness of the offence. We believe this is not always the case at present. We also think that minor offences in particular should more often be dealt with by stopping the vehicle and issuing a warning. This is far more effective than immediately imposing a fine.
