Do you have a disability? If so, you may be eligible for a disabled parking permit under certain conditions. This will allow you to park in designated disabled parking spaces.
Parking in a disabled bay without a valid permit can lead to a hefty fine. In 2019, you'll have to cough up no less than 380 euros if you park illegally in a disabled parking space.
Apply for a disabled parking permit
To apply for a disabled parking permit, you need to contact your own municipality. A registered doctor will assess your eligibility for such a permit during a medical examination. The primary criterion is that you are unable to walk 100 metres independently for at least six months. Therefore, you are not eligible for a disabled parking permit if your disability is temporary.
Types of disabled parking badges
There are two types of disabled parking permits: a driver's permit, for when you are driving yourself, or a passenger's permit, for when you are being driven by someone else. In the latter case, you must require door-to-door assistance from the driver. For people who are permanently confined to a wheelchair, there is the combined disabled parking permit.
Personal
A disabled parking permit is personal and not vehicle-registration dependent. You can therefore, in principle, use the card in any vehicle and in all general disabled parking bays. In addition to general disabled parking bays, there are disabled parking bays that are vehicle-registration specific. You may only park here with the vehicle whose registration number is indicated on the small sign below the P sign.
Original or copy?
To prevent misuse, you must always use the original disability card. A copy is not legally valid and could result in a fine. This can lead to problems in certain situations, for example, when hiring a car or van.
If you wish to use general disabled parking spaces with your rental car or van, you must possess the original disabled parking permit. This means you cannot leave your own vehicle in a general disabled parking space at that time, as the original is required for this.

Good evening. I have a question. If I come to the Netherlands on holiday, is there anywhere I can get a temporary disabled parking permit (for a fee, of course) so I can park without problems?
If you live in the EU, you can use your local council's parking permit. I don't know if Dutch municipalities issue temporary parking permits; you'll have to see a doctor first.
