Without fluids, your car won't run. Some fluids you only need to top up, while others need to be completely replaced from time to time. Here's an overview of the essential fluids in your car.
Fuel
We don't need to tell you that you have to refuel, of course. But it's worth knowing that driving deep into your reserve can damage the fuel pump. So refuel in good time and don't run on empty.
Coolant
Coolant prevents the engine from overheating by carrying heat away. In some cars, simply topping up the coolant is enough. In others, you need to replace the coolant from time to time. In an emergency you can top up the coolant reservoir with water, but you should then have the coolant replaced as soon as possible. If you regularly have to top up the coolant, this may indicate a leak.
Engine oil
The main function of engine oil is to lubricate the moving parts of the engine. Engine oil also has a cooling and cleaning function. It's important to check the oil level regularly and top up the oil when needed. During your car's minor and major service, the engine oil is completely replaced and the oil filter is renewed. Make sure you use engine oil with the viscosity recommended for your car. Here too, regularly topping up (>1 l/1,000 km) may point to a leak or wear.
Brake fluid
In principle, you don't need to top up the brake fluid yourself. Your mechanic replaces the brake fluid on average once every two years during the major or minor service. If your brake fluid is no longer at the right level, this almost always indicates a leak, because your braking system is a closed system.
Windscreen washer fluid
After fuel, windscreen washer fluid is the fluid you'll need to top up most often. It's important for clear visibility and safe driving. In winter, make sure you use the blue windscreen washer fluid with antifreeze. The yellow or pink fluid can freeze in winter.
