Terschelling

Moving to Terschelling?

I'm on the boat to Terschelling.

With a few hundred other tourists. A Wadden Island seemed like a good choice for a holiday. With all the orange areas near or far abroad, we decided to stay in the Netherlands.

It's always windy on the Wadden Islands, so any aerosols with viruses are gone quickly.

Only not on the boat. The shipping company has decided that we all have to wear a face mask. All passengers and all staff.

Lovely, isn't it, breathing your own aerosols for two hours.

Also handy for the Frisian, blonde lady in the boat restaurant. The poor soul asks everyone the same thing a few times. And then she still doesn't understand it.

When it's my turn, she asks what I want to eat. Hrmpffff, grzzpp, I say from behind my face mask. I think I'm asking quite clearly for a hamburger.

But she starts filling my plate with chips.

Then she says: psffgrm, ezzmn. I say: yes, go ahead. Then, lo and behold, a hamburger is pushed onto my plate. So she understood me correctly after all?

After eating, we're going to get some fresh air on the deck. You'll need to wear a face mask there too.

I'm glad I don't smoke anymore. You're not even allowed to smoke here on deck anymore. Being in the open air for two hours without being allowed to smoke is torture for a smoker. It also seems difficult to me, smoking through your face mask.

But look there!

A hardened addict plucks up the courage to light a cigarette. The scoundrel is immediately rebuked by 5 other passengers.

Nice to be on holiday with Dutch people again. We don't like rules ourselves, but everyone else must of course adhere to them.

Light smoker.

I can hear and see the seagulls around me. You are not allowed to feed them. According to signs on the boat, their digestive system works very quickly. Therefore, by feeding the seagulls, you risk the boat being fouled from above.

Perhaps we should make seagulls wear butt plugs when they come near the boat.

What would Terschelling be like?

I went there as a little boy with my parents. On holiday to Terschelling.

And when I was 18. With 30 classmates, we went on a sailing trip across the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. I vaguely remember the places we docked, including Terschelling. Even vaguer are the memories of the nice cafés in the harbours.

Would I be able to or want to live on an island like that?

Funny, to ask yourself that question.

Many people do that, if you watch the program 'Ik Vertrek'. Moving to your holiday destination. As if your whole life will be one big holiday.

What are your plans?

Perhaps not that great to live in your favourite holiday destination.

Getting a bedroom set from IKEA is also a plan.

Or a garden set via Marktplaats.

In all those cases, I'm happy to help you with a delivery van in the Geleen region.

There are still a few available this weekend.

You can choose one from here..
