When will hydrogen cars be available?

Hybrid and fully electric cars are on a strong rise. Will we all be driving electric in 2030, when petrol and diesel cars are no longer allowed to be sold? That remains to be seen. Because there is another ‘alternative’ energy source for cars: hydrogen.

Experts believe that in the long run, the electric car will be surpassed by the hydrogen car, or fuel cell car. Hydrogen cars also run on electricity, only it's not supplied by a battery, but by a fuel cell. In that cell, water is converted into electricity, which powers the electric motor.

Yield

Unlike an electric car, you don't need to charge a hydrogen car. Just like petrol and diesel, you can simply ‘refuel’ with hydrogen. Moreover, you can travel twice as far on a litre of hydrogen as on a litre of petrol or diesel. Although that makes no difference to the environment, because hydrogen is a one hundred percent sustainable and clean fuel. The only thing the car emits is water vapour.

History of the hydrogen car

As a prototype, the hydrogen car has existed since the 1990s. In 2007, the first hydrogen car was put into production: the Honda FCX Clarity, which was incidentally only available in the US. To date, seven hydrogen cars have come onto the market. In the Netherlands, several models from Toyota and Hyundai are already on the road. Audi, BMW and Lexus will present their hydrogen cars around 2020. Honda and Mercedes probably even sooner. While these brands are actively engaged in the development of a hydrogen car, almost all major car brands are researching the technology.

16 more hydrogen refuelling stations in 2018

Although the Netherlands is leading the way in electric cars, we are lagging behind when it comes to hydrogen cars. But that is set to change rapidly, as sixteen hydrogen refuelling stations are expected to be opened in the Netherlands by the end of this year. The abolition of petrol and diesel cars in 2030 will only further stimulate the development of the hydrogen car. Around that time, the hydrogen car will be just as ‘commonplace’ as the electric car.

At Adrem, no hydrogen for now if you're a Car hire in the Geleen region

  1. In 2018, Mercedes made an extensive reportage
    made on the GLC F-cell.
The car would only be available via leasing.
What are the current prospects in Belgium?

    1. A car does not emit ‘hydrogen vapour’ but water vapour. Hydrogen reacts with oxygen from the air to form water.
