Insurance of your van

Not such a fine subject: insurance.

Personally, I hate it. I can get quite annoyed by advertisements from insurance companies that scare me about what might happen.

Fine, but then why are they being so difficult when I am insured and they should actually pay something to me?

Insurance you can take out.

Sometimes because they are mandatory, sometimes voluntary.

Since you have booked a van or van, I would like to send you a few tips on what to look out for when it comes to rental car insurance.

At Adrem Limburg, all vehicles are WA and casco insured for all countries belonging to the coverage area of the green card. The maximum WA coverage is €2.5 million per event.

Insurance - excess

Usually, car rental companies have a deductible with the rental contract. This excess is charged if damage occurs during the rental that we cannot recover from a counterparty.

You can think of 3 cases for damages:

  1. You stop at a traffic light, and someone collides with the back of your rented van. In this case, the damage is recovered from your rear driver, and you do not have to pay anything extra to the car hire company.
  2. You hit a pole, a tree or another vehicle during the rental. In this case, the excess will be charged.
  3. You park the car to go somewhere for a cup of coffee. Upon returning, it turns out that someone has driven into your rental car, but the culprit did not leave a note under the windscreen wiper. In that case, the rental company is forced to charge the excess; the damage cannot be recovered from any other party.

At Adrem Limburg, we have a high excess. In our experience, tenants become more cautious when the excess is high. However, this risk can be bought off at an additional premium to a lower amount. For our vans, we apply the following standard excesses and surrenderable excess (the insurance rates do not include VAT):

Van (category R) van (category S, T and U):

  • standard excess: EUR 1500, no additional costs
  • purchased excess: EUR 450, for EUR 15 per day

Delivery vans with furniture box (category V):

  • standard excess: EUR 1750, no extra charge
  • purchased excess: EUR 650, for EUR 25 per day

When collecting the van, you can indicate whether you want to reduce the excess or not.

When are you insured?

The hire car is insured only when we are in possession of all the credentials of persons who will be driving the car. This means that if a licensed person is driving the car but is not known to us, the car is therefore not insured.

At Adrem Limburg, it is possible for several people to drive the car. There is no extra charge for this. Of course, we do need to receive a copy of identification and driving licence from each driver before the car is hired out.
