You have decided to move yourself. A good plan, because moving yourself is a lot cheaper than calling in the help of a professional moving company. But what do you need, besides a van of course, to move yourself?
Moving boxes
A family with two children will quickly need 30-40 moving boxes. Choose professional moving boxes with a high load capacity. This does not mean that you should also load the box to the maximum, because you must of course also be able to lift the box.
Moving boxes come in different sizes. Depending on the size, a moving box costs about one to two euros each. In addition to moving boxes, you will probably also need wrapping paper and foam or bubble wrap to protect your belongings, tape to seal the boxes and stickers to label them.
Moving blankets
Of course, your furniture does not fit in moving boxes. To protect it during transport, you need special (woven and stitched) storage or moving blankets. For a large move, you will quickly need twenty moving blankets.
Handcart
Many hands make light work. So does a hand truck. If you have to move a lot of heavy objects, a hand truck (also known as a handcart) is not an unnecessary luxury. Ideal for moving your fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Do you live in an apartment building without a lift? Then consider a stair hand truck with a 3-armed wheel set.
Furniture roller
A furniture or crate dolly, also called a dog, is ideal for moving heavy furniture or crates.
Tie downs
To prevent items from sliding or tipping over in the cargo area of your van, we strongly recommend that you secure them with tension straps.
Tool box
Also take a tool set with you, because you will always need Allen keys, spanners and screwdrivers during a move, for (dis)assembling furniture for example. Don't forget your work gloves. Also check out our checklist about the preparing for a move, so that the move goes smoothly.
